Top 3 Shows I Need to Finish

Yes, sometimes loving a show doesn't make you watch it through the end. Maybe that's one of the reasons, knowing that there'll be no more episodes, you just stop watching. Or sometimes you just stop watching and forget about it as your watchlist steadily grow. So here it is: the top 3 series that I love but didn't finish yet. I'm just considering 'recent' series and, of course, already finished. So no ongoing series here.

It's time for a Friday Finds. Here I show you some things that I discovered during the week: books, movies, TV shows, music, and everything else.

The Doctor Recommends: Father Brown

Father Brown is a TV show based on G. K. Chesterton's eponymous books. Featuring a curious and extremely observant parish catholic priest who can't resist the temptation to investigate killings carried out in the country. And of course, there's a lot happening around him.

Atelier: A Refreshing Netflix Original

This time, I went for a Netflix original j-drama, developed by Fuji Television, called Atelier (a.k.a Underwear). Although I've watched Japanese and Chinese movies when I was younger, this was my first Asian TV show.

Killjoys Season 1 Review

After finishing Wynonna Earp's first season, I decided to try Killjoys. I was interested in it before its premiere, but after reading some bad reviews I decided not to watch it. Shame on me, trusting online reviews and not watching even the first episode to have my own opinion. But then I stumbled upon some good reviews on the first season and read a blog post recommending it, so here I am!

First Impressions: Sweetness and Lightning

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a winner already. The most beautiful, cute and touching anime of the season is Sweetness and Lightning (Amaama to Inazuma). IT'S SO FLUFFY I'M GONNA DIE!

First impressions: Love Live! Sunshine!!

Yes. This season I'll be watching Love Live Sunshine. I never watched Love Live or any idol anime before, with the exception of a couple episodes of The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls. And when I decided to watch it, they announced this new installment so I changed my plans and opted for this one instead.

First Impressions: ReLIFE

This anime didn't caught my attention before the season started. I didn't even add it as plan-to-watch to check it later. Mostly because for some dumb reason I thought it won't be for me, or that it won't be good, and didn't bother to even watch the trailer. But I was wrong, apparently.

Wynonna Earp season 1 review

This was a show that I was anxious to watch. Based on the eponymous comics, Wynonna Earp promised a fun weird-western show, with action and a strong female lead. And it delivered much more than that.

Boku no Hero Academia Review

Spring season is over, and it's time to comment the ones that I enjoyed the most. First of all, Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia), one of the most hyped anime of this season.

My OneNote Dungeons and Dragons character sheet

I'm new to Dungeons and Dragons, and only played the 5th edition starter adventure until now. So far I'm really enjoying it: the battles, the roleplaying, the characters, the story; but I've to admit that keeping notes and updating the character info on paper is annoying sometimes.

I'm the one keeping the adventure's notes and the party loot as well. I don't see a problem with that, except for a few issues: my handwriting is horrible, I write slowly on paper, and after writing and erasing a few times, the paper starts refusing to be written on again. Then I decided to go digital.

My first idea was to continue using a form fillable pdf, but instead of printing it, keeping it on the computer, and then use OneNote to well... write notes. But then I decided to try to go full-on OneNote and here I am to share the initial results.

Finished Lost Mine of Phandelver

Last Sunday my group finished the starter set adventure: Lost Mine of Phandelver. Only 2 characters survived the whole adventure: Zelda, my High Elf Wizard, and Golleros, a Dwarf Barbarian. Also, a new player joined us later.

Summer 2016 Anime

Spring season is approaching its end, and now it's time to talk about what I plan to watch, or more like 'give it a shot' list, next season. I don't want to watch much anime of the season, because there'll be some leftovers, and I still have a lot of anime from past seasons to watch. After all, I'm preferring to watch already completed, blu-ray version, anime. The full list of the season can be found at MyAnimeList.

Below you can check the anime that I'm sure to watch, and also the ones that I have high expectations. In another post, I'll list other interesting anime that I'll try. Stay tuned.

Sure to Watch

Shokugeki no Souma: Ni no Sara - MAL

I really loved Shokugeki no Soma, and I was avid to watch more of it. If you didn't watch it, DO IT! The first few episodes have a lot of fanservice, but it fades along the series.

Nanatsu no Taizai: Seisen no Shirushi - MAL

Another anime that I loved! I finished it last week, ad I'm totally going to watch the continuation.

High Expectations

Battery - MAL

It's been a log time since I watched a sports anime. Plus, I wanted to watch Diamond no Ace, or ani other baseball anime, but they're too long. This one seems good, and not focused on giving 'fangirl moments' with episodes filled with ships. THANK YOU ZEUS!

Love Live! Sunshine!! - MAL

I was planning on FINALLY watching Love Live. My concern was the sheer amount of episodes. Seems like this one is a brand new series.

Amaama to Inazuma - MAL

I'm always in need of another cute and cozy slice-of-life anime. This one seems to do the job :)

Penny Dreadful: The Day Tennyson Died

Ladies and gentlemen, Penny Dreadful is back for another season, and after watching the season premiere, I can't help but have high hopes for this season, and feel extremely anxious for the upcoming episodes. As usual, I grabbed a beer suited for the colder weather we have now (I live in Brazil), turned off the lights and started watching the episode.

Warning: this post contains spoilers

Spring Anime 2016 - First Impressions

It's time for another first impressions post, with my reviews about Spring 2016 anime that I watched. Between brackets is the number of episodes I've watched so far / Total.

First Impressions: Wynonna Earp

Last week I decided to give Wynonna Earp a try. After the first episode premiered, the poor IMDB and Trakt.tv ratings made me put this show aside. But then I read some reviews, stumbled over twitter reactions, and thought: "Why not? It's the kind of show I usually love". I happened to love it, and I guess sometimes we learn (or remember) a life lesson, and this time, it's about not trusting online ratings for TV shows.

Wynonna Earp follows Wyatt Earp's great granddaughter as she battles demons and other creatures. With her unique abilities, and a posse of dysfunctional allies, she's the only thing that can bring the paranormal to justice.

Dungeons and Dragons: Our second session

In the last session

We helped some goblins defeat a bugbear, them went to the city and learned about problems that are afflicting the citizens, including thieves, orcs, and a banshee.

The Doctor Recommends: Soul Eater Not

I admit that I never read or watched Soul Eater, although I want to, but I don't see this changing because it's a long manga/anime series. But this spin-off is a good way to experience the world created by Atsushi Ohkubo. It has only 5 volumes/12 episodes, and it's lovely and fun.

My first dungeons and dragons session

This Sunday we had our first dungeons and dragons (5th edition) session. A week before we met just to get to know each other, create our characters and we played a bit of the Pathfinder card game. But now we started the adventure from the starter set, slew some goblins and had a lot of fun.

Review: The Assassin's Curse Duology

This is a book series (duology) that is not that famous (I think) but worth reading.

Ananna of the Tanarau abandons ship when her parents try to marry her off to an allying pirate clan: she wants to captain her own boat, not serve as second-in-command to her handsome yet clueless fiance. But her escape has dire consequences when she learns the scorned clan has sent an assassin after her.

And when the assassin, Naji, finally catches up with her, things get even worse. Ananna inadvertently triggers a nasty curse — with a life-altering result. Now Ananna and Naji are forced to become uneasy allies as they work together to break the curse and return their lives back to normal. Or at least as normal as the lives of a pirate and an assassin can be.

The Doctor Recommends: The Americans

Now premiering its 4th season, The Americans is always proving itself as a great, insightful and thought-provoking show. After a long time without any major spy shows (that I remember, at least), The Americans is good and strong enough to, hopefully, star a new wave of TV spy dramas.

Weekly Updates #4

It's been a looooooong time since I did a weekly update (I guess it's not weekly), but I'll be trying to start posting it again.

First impressions: Rokka no Yuusha

Here are my first impressions of Rokka no Yuusha (Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers), after watching the first episode: The Strongest Man in the World.

When the Demon God awakes from the depths of darkness, the Goddess of Fate selects six heroes and bequeaths them with the power to save the world. Adlet, a boy who proclaims himself the strongest man in the world, has been selected among "The Heroes of the Six Flowers." However, as the heroes gather, they soon begin to suspect that someone amongst them is an imposter, as this time, there are seven of them.

Female Characters and Destroyed Childhoods on Ghostbusters

There's a lot of complaining going around about the new Ghostbusters movie. And you should completely disregard that and go watch the movie in the theaters. Or not, if you honestly are not interested.

First of all, everyone can like a movie/trailer or not, and I fully support that. You are not required to like or dislike. REALLY! But what you need is a valid reason for your opinion or argument and the sex or color of the cast is not one of them, neither the 'destroyed childhood factor', something that the whiners complainers believe to exist.

First Impressions: Fire Brigade of Flames [#0]

By the same author of Soul Eater and Soul Eater Not, comes Fire Brigade of Flames (Enen no Shouboutai), a manga about people who can control fire. How awesome is this? Continue reading to find out!

An unexplainable phenomenon of people bursting into flames assails humanity. Put your life on the line to extinguish the flames! A great conflagration that will shake up the manga world! A sci-fi firefighting battle!

Top Anime - Week 8 2016

After we got through the mid-season, I decided to check which anime are considered to be the top ones (Winter 2016 only). Along with the list, I'll leave my comments about (almost) each one.

Manga Review: Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, Vol. 1

A couple months ago I was thinking about starting to read a Light Novel, and one that was recommended was Mushoku Tensei. I didn't start any LN, but this week I decided to go for some manga. And then, for my pleasure, I found out that there's a manga version being published. Hooray!

A SECOND CHANCE IN A NEW WORLD!
An unemployed otaku has just reached the lowest point in his life. He wants nothing more than the ability to start over, but just as he thinks it may be possible...he gets hit by a truck and dies! Shockingly, he finds himself reborn into an infant’s body in a strange new world of swords and magic.
His identity now is Rudeus Greyrat, yet he still retains the memories of his previous life. Reborn into a new family, Rudeus makes use of his past experiences to forge ahead in this fantasy world as a true prodigy―gifted with maturity beyond his years and a natural born talent for magic. With swords instead of chopsticks, and spell books instead of the internet, can Rudeus redeem himself in this wondrous yet dangerous land?

Better wait than try to keep up

Some months ago I started noticing how watching or reading something as it's being released don't work for me. It works for some time, until I can't read or watch it in the week it goes on air or it's published, and then I fall behind the schedule. After this, it's difficult for me to go back to it and catch up. I don't know why, but I see the episodes or issues piling up and end up losing interest. And, of course, there are always new comics and TV shows starting, so I want to start following more and more.

That's why I was thinking about focusing on already finished seasons/series for TV series and anime, and paperbacks for the comics and manga. And this month I finally decided to put my energy in finishing some things on my list and prioritizing things that I can watch or read at my own pace, finishing it before moving to something else.

Of course, I'll continue keeping up with some TV shows that I really enjoy, like The Flash and Penny Dreadful, and every anime season I'll choose three or four to watch as they are released. But these are the exceptions and not the *new* rule.

And this is already working for me. This month I FINALLY finished the first season of Hell on Wheels, and now I'm going to finish Fortitude (also the first season). Let's keep up with this mindset, and I hope I'll enjoy my TV shows better.

Late New Year's resolution: buy less books (for now)

After some time watching TV shows and anime, and reading comic books, I decided to go back to my beloved books. And along with this, I got that urge to go to GoodReads and Youtube and add more books to my already big 'want-to-read' list.

But, having a lot of unread books and needing to save money, I just decided that I could only buy 1 new book for each 2 that I read from the ones I already have NOW. The only exception allowed if there's a good discount on some kindle book that it's on my TBR, and that's because I have a $13 gift card on Amazon, so I won't be spending money.

Most of these books are 2014 Christmas gifts. That's because last year I decided to improve my English and, although my reading skills were good already, I've tried to keep the focus and chose to read almost only in English rather than the books in Portuguese that I already had. But I ended up not reading much, as I started to watch more cartoons, TV shows and movies without subtitles (for most of the time, at least).

Anyway, it was a great year, and with my IELTS test scheduled to Feb. 18th, now I'll try to catch up with the books I already have. It'll be great for my wallet and my brain, as I'll stop feeling frustrated and guilty for not reading them.

And you, what are you 2016 resolutions?

Anime Winter 2016: First Impressions (Part 1)

Now that I have watched enough episodes of the season's anime, I'll leave my impressions below.
