Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen Ep. 2 - The Righteous Man

The first episode of Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen was gorgeous and cute. And on the second episode, we got to see some action and know more about the world.

SPOILERS

Haku and Kuon earn some extra money after Haku fixed the well (ep. 1). That gives us some knowledge about this world's currency, and Haku's math abilities, reinforcing his aptitude for more 'brain' centered jobs. Then, both enter a party to hunt insects called gigiri. During the trip, we are introduced to a Maroro, a cowardly scholar that can use magic (that they call Thaumaturgy). The way that he casts the spell is strange, but funny to watch.

During the encounter with the gigiri, a bigger and more dangerous type attacks the group: the boro-gigiri. It appears all of a sudden, killing one the of party members right in front of Haku. They flee, but soon discover that the boro-gigiri is after them.

Haku is the one who had an idea: attracting the boro-gigiri to the mountain. That way, the big red-colored blob called 'the curse' can kill the insect for them. What follows next is a nice battle scene that shows us Ukon's combat skills. And again, is Haku to come up with an idea that saves their lives.

In the end, our heroes return to the village and Haku and Ukon go to say goodbye to the guys who died before. That scene was particularly heartwarming, as we (and Haku) learn that the 'flappy-ear' people prefer to say goodbye with a smile.

I loved this episode as much as the first. This anime is presenting a good mix of cute and battle scenes, along with the world building/exposition.

Final toughs:

  • OMG! The OP and ED are awesome;
  • Looks like Kuon will have some competition for Haku's heart in the upcoming episodes;
  • Haku now has a battle metal fan, and seems like he knows how to use it.
