First Impressions: Hard Magic by Larry Correia

A week ago I started reading Hard Magic, by Larry Correia. It's the first book in The Grimnoir Chronicles, and it features a hardboiled private-eye detective that has the power to alter the gravity according to his will. It's set in a steampunk world with an aternate history, and some people have magical abilities called Power. There are many degrees and types of power, for being able to use yours fingers as a lighter, to the ability to make someone ill with your touch, or to release lightning with your hands, or even move through walls.

“You know, Purvis, I’ve never got in a gunfight and said afterwards, damn, I wish I hadn’t brought all that extra ammo.”

It's a pulp noir mixed with steampunk and magic, featuring a bad-ass anti-hero that's working with the police just because they offered him a deal to release him earlier from prison. I'm really enjoying it so far and it has been a great read.
He kept the gun on the driver, but kept one eye glued to the blonde. In this crew, he wouldn’t have been surprised if she’d started tossing undead flaming grizzly bears at him or something.

Judging by its cover: The Harvest (The Heartland Trilogy #3) by Chuck Wendig

"You can't judge a book by its cover". This is one of the sayings that sure most readers end up doing without even realizing it. The reason for it is easy to imagine: the cover is usually the first thing we see (or know) about a book. We don't read the synopsis or summary without seeing the cover first, and even when someone recommends a book and you go search for more info you end up seeing the cover.

Regardless of the book being good or not, and that we base (or not) our reading interest by it, the point is that the cover is always something that can generate interest. And that's the case of a new book released this week: The Harvest
The Harvest (The Heartland Trilogy #3) by Chuck Wendig
Publisher: Skyscape
Release date: July 14th 2015
When Cael awakens from a Blightborn sleep, miles away from the world he remembers, he sets out across the Heartland to gather his friends for one last mission. As the mechanicals, a war flotilla, and a pack of feral Empyrean girls begin to close in on the Heartland, there isn’t much time to make their next move. But if they can uncover a secret weapon in time, Cael and his friends might just find themselves with the power to save the world — or destroy it — resting in their hands.

I loved the cover and, of course, I went to search for more information about this trilogy. It's a dystopic ( =/ ) steampunk ( :D ), that has sci-fi and fantasy elements ( =DD ). The premise is basically about a rebellion against a government that only allows corn to be planted, and that lives on sky flotillas while the workers try to survive on land. After the release of this last book on the trilogy, I'll search for reviews and decide if I'll read it. Looks very interesting!
